Description

Being a Digby County native, Maud Lewis is a major inspiration. The replica of her tiny house is about ten minutes from my childhood home and I’ve seen the original in person at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Every now and then I dig out some books about her and watch her story in documentaries or the Maudie movie. She was an amazing little lady. This is my attempt to pay homage to her and my Digby town.

Originally painted in watercolour, I used a reference photo of the Maud Lewis Replica House in Seabrook, Nova Scotia. The replica was built by Murray Ross after Maud’s original house was relocated to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. For more info, check out CBC’s interview with Ross here: https://bit.ly/2YtWIuN

The original art was a joy to paint, and I fell in love with it after it was complete. Instead of parting with the original, it now hangs happily in my own home. I decided reproduced prints would be best so here they are, for your enjoyment!
